Nearly 300 volunteers repair area shelters Sept. 8

The Home Builders Foundation of Metropolitan Portland is preparing for its second-annual Painting a Better Tomorrow event Sept. 8. This program organizes teams of volunteers from the building industry who donate their labor and materials to help repair Portland’s area shelters.

Most of the Portland-area shelters are non-profits operating on shoestring budgets. The Home Builders Foundation started the Painting a Better Tomorrow program to help shelters address facility repairs and maintenance.

Shelter operators apply for help with projects that can be completed in a day – leaky roofs, interior and exterior painting, flooring and sub-flooring repair, and more.

Nearly 300 volunteers representing 42 local companies will be handling projects at 20 shelters around the metro Portland area.

This is a very visual, very compelling story about the home building industry doing what it does best in support of the Portland community.

Rafael House is one of the largest domestic violence shelters in Oregon, providing emergency shelter to women and children survivors of domestic violence. Each year over 350 women, children and teenagers make Raphael House their home. 60 percent of Rafael House participants are under the age of 18. Because of the great need, the state of Oregon only allows Rafael House to close for maintenance and repairs for one week each year.  However, in 2007 it was determined that the shelter needed more attention—so the shelter will be closed for two weeks. During this time several teams will assist through the Painting a Better Tomorrow program. Miller Paint Company will be supplying the paint and their employees, together with their customer Jenkins Painting, will be painting the interior of the shelter.
